In 2022, the infant to K2 children of Agape Little Uni @ Compassvale celebrated Singapore’s National Day with an in-school event. The children were encouraged to wear the national colours of red and white to school, which symbolise the flag. The day started with a sing-along in which all the children sang the 2022 National Day song “Stronger Together” along with the more popular classics such as “This is Home” and “We are Singapore”.
The K2 children had a short quiz and a sharing session in which the children discussed and shared the significance of the Singapore flag’s colours, stars, and crescent moon’s symbolistic meaning. The children created their flag using a drawing block, coloured pencils, and a chopstick. They also did a national-day-themed word search puzzle that was given to the children to identify words that were linked to the national day celebration. The K1 children, on the other hand, sang and danced to some of the national day songs. The children then worked together to make two 3D merlion paintings for the class, followed by an individual firework painting using cotton buds and paint.
At the nursery level, the children created their national day craftwork using cotton wool and red paper cut-outs on a paper plate to create their flag. In the early years, the children created a huge flag using the mosaic art technique, pasting red and white paper cut-outs. During the tea break, all the children tasted a specially prepared, red-and-white-themed agar jelly for a snack.
It felt heartening to see how we uniquely celebrated the National Day despite the challenges and limitations faced with the Covid-19 restriction still in place making it even more memorable.
